Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and width, if both safeties are shaded to one side or playing shallow, the double post concept will have a clear throwing lane on the opposite post. Post-snap, watch for a deep middle safety in single-high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1, since a rangy user-controlled safety sitting in the middle of the field can jump both post routes and turn this into a pick six. Key the corners early, if they press and trail the post routes tightly in man coverage without safety help over the top, this play is vulnerable to a jump or undercut from a physical corner. Watch linebacker depth on the tight end's corner route, if a linebacker sinks deep into that lane instead of respecting the flat, it can clog the sideline throwing window and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Recognize disguised zone blitzes where the defense drops extra defenders into the deep middle after showing man pre-snap, since this can bait a throw into a lurking defender sitting right in the post lane.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety alignment because this concept lives and dies off how the safeties rotate at the snap.
Against Cover 2, target the post that the safety rotates away from since the double post overloads one half of the field and forces a choice between the two vertical threats.
Against Cover 4, throw with anticipation to the post that wins inside leverage on the safety before he can get depth, since Cover 4 safeties are reading run/pass longer and can be baited.
Use hot routes to convert the check release back into a quick out or flat route if you expect man coverage with a blitz look, giving yourself an immediate answer against pressure.
