Defensive Reads

Look at safety depth before the snap, if a safety is stacked in the box the run fit is stronger and the QB should favor throwing based checks if the RPO version of the concept is available. Cornerback press alignment on the outside receivers signals man coverage and less risk of an extra run defender rotating down. Post snap, track linebacker flow, if they overpursue the give look the QB keep lane opens up on the backside edge.

Usage Tips

Read the play side defensive end pre snap and post snap to determine if he is crashing down on the HB or staying wide to contain the QB.

Use this play on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are not yet in obvious pass shells.

Pair Y Lead Read Option with RPO Read Bubble and RPO Zone Read Bubble in the same set so defenses cannot sit on one look and linebackers stay honest.

If the defense shows a heavy box or a linebacker cheating down pre snap, lean toward the keep read and get the QB moving to the edge quickly.

Mix in Inside Zone from the same personnel to keep the blocking scheme disguised and force defenders to respect multiple gap runs before committing to the read option.
