Breakdown

RPO Read FL Screen out of Shotgun Double Stack gives the quarterback a true run pass option read on every snap. The diagram shows the left receiver running a quick screen route to the flat while the running back takes a handoff read to the right side behind the offensive line, and the backside receiver runs a vertical release to occupy the corner. This is an RPO built to attack light boxes and overaggressive linebackers, with the quarterback reading the flow of the second level defenders to decide between handing off the run or pulling and throwing the bubble screen to the flanker.

Defensive Reads

Read the play side linebacker depth immediately after the snap, if he sprints downhill to fill the run gap the screen lane opens up wide Identify if the defense is in a zone shell with off corners, since that alignment gives the flanker screen blocker room to work in space Watch for a user controlled defender sitting on the screen or lurking near the flat, this is the primary counter and forces a switch to the run read Man coverage on the flanker with a corner playing tight to the line is a strong signal to hand the ball off instead of throwing the screen Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge often leave the screen wide open since the second level defenders are occupied with gap responsibilities

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, lean toward pulling and throwing the screen immediately

Watch the flanker's cornerback pre-snap, if he is playing off coverage or shaded inside, the screen has room to develop and should be your first read

Use this play on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations where defenses expect a handoff, since the RPO tag punishes linebackers who crash downhill

Pair this call with RPO Alert Screen or RPO Zone Alert Screen later in a series so the defense cannot key on one specific flanker route or run direction

Motion the backside receiver if allowed to get a pre-snap look at man versus zone before deciding your run pass decision
