Shotgun Tight is the condensed 11 personnel look in the Shotgun family. Instead of spreading receivers to the numbers like Shotgun Wing Trips or the various spread sets, Tight pulls both outside receivers inside the numbers with the tight end attached or wing aligned close to the tackle box. You get a single back offset next to the quarterback, one tight end, and three receivers all working in a compressed splits window. That alignment alone changes how the defense has to play you: press corners lose their leverage help, zone defenders get squeezed into a smaller landmark area, and the sideline effectively becomes dead space until your routes break out into it.
The compressed splits are what make this set special. Every crossing concept in the book (All Cross, Y Cross, Tight Crosses, Mesh, Mesh Spot, Cross H Divide, PA Clear Cross) hits faster because the receivers start closer to the traffic. Rub and pick action happens naturally without you having to motion anyone into position, which is brutal against man coverage. On the flip side, the Bench family (Bench, Bench Spray, Bench Swirl-Return, Bench Switch) turns those tight splits into instant sideline leverage since your receivers are breaking out into completely vacated space instead of fighting a boundary corner who already has help.
Personnel wise, the 3DRB, Gadget, and SLWR tags tell you exactly how to build the set. Your slot receiver tag means a route running specialist gets isolated in the middle of the field against a nickel or a linebacker, and from tight splits that mismatch shows up immediately on Slot Stick, Jets Slot Post, and PA Slot Options. The 3DRB tag matters because Verticals HB Burst, HB Quick Base, and Wheel Inside Curl all rely on a back who can actually win in space. Add Read Option, HB Draw, and HB Sweep out of the same look and you keep the defense honest without ever changing personnel, which is the entire point of running a compressed 11 set in competitive Madden.
Read the corner leverage pre-snap. Inside leverage with a high safety means go to Bench or Bench Switch for the sideline shot, outside leverage means crossers like Y Cross, Mesh, or Cross H Divide are open underneath
On third and short to medium, live in Slot Stick, Stick, and Z Spot, then hot route the back to a flat or angle route as your blitz beater since you have no width to absorb pressure otherwise
Use motion sparingly but intentionally: a short motion across the formation on Mesh or Mesh Spot confirms man versus zone and widens the rub angle, but snap it before the motion man settles to avoid losing the pick
Set up PA Deep Post, PA Clear Cross, and Mtn Drive Sluggo only after you have hammered the underneath crossers enough that the user safety starts crashing down
Against heavy pressure looks, block the tight end on HB Draw or check to Frisco and Drive H Out where the quick outs get the ball out before the free rusher arrives
Mix in HB Sweep and Read Option on early downs to pull the nickel and the edge defender out of their pass drop rules and slow their aggression on the next crossing concept
