The three-man bunch to the left stacks a sluggo (slant and go) up the seam, a deep corner route breaking outside, and an underneath drive route working flat across the field, while the right side runs a wheel route out of the backfield that climbs vertically after breaking outside the flat defender. The blocking scheme is pass protection with the running back releasing on the wheel, so this is a designed man beater intended to attack cornerbacks playing tight coverage with the sluggo double move. Primary progression starts with the sluggo route up top, works down to the drive route underneath if the corner sits, and checks to the wheel route on the boundary as a manual user throw against blown coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the cornerback over the motion man and the outside receiver at the snap, aggressive man press technique is exactly what the sluggo route is designed to torch. Key the flat defender on the right side, if he widens too far with the running back on the wheel route you have a free vertical shot on the sideline. Diagnose two high safety shells pre-snap, Cover 4 and Cover 2 looks with soft outside corners open up the underneath drive route as the quicker answer. Post-snap, feel for a lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the deep middle hole, that defender can undercut the sluggo route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 3 zone with a sky safety rotating over the top, since the sluggo has to be thrown into a tight window against a deep third defender.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and the sluggo becomes a high value shot play.

Take the shot on the sluggo route immediately against Cover 1 or Cover 3 press looks since the double move is designed to freeze a corner playing tight technique.

If the safety shell shows two high shells with soft corners, work the drive route underneath quickly before the window closes against zone drops.

Save the wheel route as your user-controlled outlet, it is a great answer against linebackers who bite on the flat or against blitz packages that leave the boundary uncovered.

Pair this call with Mtn Slant Whip In or Y Cross earlier in a series so defenders start jumping short routes, then hit Sluggo off that tendency for the explosive shot down the field.
