Slot Stick lines up out of Shotgun Tight 11 personnel and shows two outside receivers running deep in routes toward the sideline off the snap, stretching the field horizontally at depth while the two inside receivers push vertically up the seams. The deep in routes act as zone beaters that settle into open windows behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties, while the vertical seam releases occupy the middle of the field and hold linebackers or safeties from sinking under the ins. This is a pure pass concept with no play-action or screen elements shown, and the primary read progresses from the seam route to the deep in on the boundary, working from inside to outside based on how the underneath defenders react.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap identify two high versus one high safety alignment since this concept thrives against two high shells that leave soft spots behind the linebackers. Watch the depth of the underneath linebackers post snap, shallow drops open the deep in routes immediately while deep drops force you to hold the ball and look off. Man coverage with press corners can jump the seam release early, so be ready to work the deep in as a rhythm throw instead. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are the biggest threat since the seam routes take too long to develop and the quarterback loses protection before the in routes break open. Cover 3 defenders sinking hard into the deep thirds will leave the underneath in routes wide open in the flat to intermediate zone.

Usage Tips

Use this on second or third and medium when you need a horizontal stretch against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 2. Check the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they widen with the seam routes the deep in behind them will be wide open. Hot route the backside seam runner into a quick out if you see a hard robber or lurk defender sitting underneath. Pair this with Stick and Curl Flat in your play calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between quick underneath throws and this deeper in breaking concept. Against man coverage look to rub the seam runner across traffic to create separation before working the deep in as your primary target.
