Read Option out of Shotgun Tight 11 personnel is a zone run play built around the QB reading the mesh point with the HB. The diagram shows the QB and HB crossing paths in the backfield with the option arrow showing the QB can pull the ball or hand it off, while the offensive line, TE, and both outside WRs hold their blocks to set up the zone run lanes. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read is the mesh point decision: the QB reads the play side defensive end or edge defender to decide whether to keep the ball or give it to the HB.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers who crash hard on the HB at the mesh point since that tells the QB to keep the ball and run. Check linebacker depth pre-snap: linebackers sitting too far off the line give running lanes to both the QB and HB on this zone scheme. Man coverage on the outside receivers with no extra run defenders in the box is a green light situation since the defense is light in the run fit. A spy or contain defender assigned to the QB shuts this play down by taking away the keep option and forcing the HB into a crowded box. User-controlled defenders who key the mesh point and stay disciplined on their assigned side of the option are the best counter to this concept.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify how many defenders are stacked in the box and whether the defense has committed extra run support to the play side edge before deciding on your run direction. Use hot routes sparingly here since this is a designed run, but consider motioning the TE across formation to get a numbers advantage on the edge you plan to attack. This play works best on early downs like first and second and short yardage third downs where defenses expect pass. Pair Read Option with PA Deep Post or PA Clear Cross from the same formation so the defense has to respect both run and play-action shots off similar backfield action. Against aggressive edge defenders who crash down hard on the mesh point, key the QB to pull the ball and attack the alley since the defense has overcommitted to the HB.
