Breakdown

Frisco is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Tight 11 personnel that overloads one side of the field while sending a receiver on a deep vertical up the opposite sideline. The backside X runs a straight Go route for a one-on-one shot, while the play side floods with a drag underneath, an out breaking to the flat, and a wheel route from the backfield that climbs vertically along the sideline after selling flat action. The play action fake up front pulls linebackers up, opening throwing lanes for the drag and creating a natural progression from the wheel to the out to the drag underneath.

Defensive Reads

Identify the flat defender pre-snap since he is stuck in a bind between the out route and the wheel route in Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells. Watch the middle linebacker depth after the snap, if he bites hard on the play action fake the drag route will be wide open underneath. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the wheel route is the biggest exploit, target the wheel against a linebacker or nickel defender in man. Blitz heavy fronts that leave a linebacker isolated on the wheel or drag will get gashed if the protection holds up long enough for the quarterback to progress through reads. Cover 2 with a hard flat defender can take away the out and wheel combo, forcing the quarterback to check down to the drag or trust the backside Go route.

Usage Tips

Look for the play side flood to overload zone defenders, especially in Cover 3 where the flat defender cannot cover both the out and the wheel route.

Use the play action fake to freeze linebackers on early down and distance situations, ideally on 1st or 2nd down when run action is credible.

If the defense shows man coverage pre-snap, key the wheel route matchup against a linebacker for a big play opportunity down the sideline.

Pair Frisco with HB Draw or Read Option from the same formation to keep defenders honest against the run action before dialing this up.

Hot route the backside Go into a comeback or hitch against press man corners if you are not confident in winning the deep shot every snap.
