This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to overload the deep safeties, with the primary read progression working outside in: read the deep corner routes first to see if the safeties widen, then work to the two inside verticals up the seams, and check down to the HB burst if the top of the defense is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch for single high safety alignment pre-snap since that often signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which are vulnerable to the seam verticals splitting the deep third defenders. If both safeties are aligned deep and wide pre-snap, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4, and target the seams between the corners and safeties where the zone drops create natural windows. Post-snap, key the safeties' first two steps: if they widen to the numbers you have a clean seam throw, if they sit in the middle you should work the outside verticals instead. Watch for a user controlled defender dropping into a deep middle lurk, which can jump the inside seam route, so be ready to layer the throw or reset to the HB burst. Against man coverage looks, check corner and linebacker depth at the snap, since press man on the outside receivers combined with a blitz can remove your first two reads and force an immediate check down to the HB.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or obvious passing situations where you expect a two high safety shell, since four verts is designed to stress Cover 2 rotation.

Before the snap identify if the safeties are showing a hard two high alignment or bailing into Cover 3, because that dictates which seam route will have the bigger throwing window.

Hot route the HB burst into a pure flat route or check him in protection if you are getting pressure looks, since he is your built in answer versus blitzes.

Pair this play with HB Draw or Read Option from the same formation to keep defenses honest against the run and set up the verticals later in a series.

Combine with Curl Flat or Stick out of the same personnel to give the defense two different answers to the same coverage look and force conflict on linebackers and safeties.
