Defensive Reads

Look for single high safety alignment pre-snap, which signals man coverage underneath and opens the corner route against an isolated cornerback. Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, since a hard trigger toward the run fake confirms the defense is selling out on the play action and the underneath drag will be wide open. If you see two deep safeties splitting the field, the defense is likely in a zone shell designed to take away the corner route, so progress to the vertical clear route stretching the seam. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position near the drag route can jump the underneath check down, so keep an eye on that defender before committing to the late progression. A quick blitz off the edge with no delayed linebacker drop means the defense is selling pressure over coverage, so get the corner route thrown on time before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use the play-action fake early in drives when your run game has been established so linebackers bite on the mesh point and open a passing lane to the corner route.

Check the corner pre-snap for two high safeties versus one high, since a single high shell tells you the corner route has to beat a deep half defender and the vertical clear route is drawing that safety away.

Hot route the backside chip release into a quicker breaking route if you are facing a heavy pressure look, since the extra half second of chip protection can get you sacked against a well timed blitz.
