Z Spot from Shotgun Tight 11 personnel is a classic Cover 3 beater built around the spot concept on the right side. The TE runs a quick corner route to the flag, the outside receiver on that side runs a hitch to the flat, and a third receiver sits down in the middle hook zone, creating the traditional flat-hook-corner triangle that stresses the curl to flat defender in Cover 3. On the backside, two receivers run deep crossing routes toward the opposite sideline to occupy that half of the field and pull coverage away from the spot concept. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to the TE, works down to the hook sitter underneath, and comes back to the flat route if the flat defender jumps the corner route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap look at the safety alignment, if you see two deep safeties rotating down to one high after the snap that is a strong indicator of Cover 3 and this play is designed to punish that exact rotation. Check cornerback depth on the TE and flat receiver side, soft corners playing off coverage signal zone and tell you the corner route to the TE will have room to work against the deep third defender. Post snap key the curl to flat defender, if he sinks with the corner route the flat route underneath will be wide open, if he sits on the flat the corner route to the TE is your window. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow hook area, since Z Spot's middle sitter route can get jumped by an aggressive user playing the shallow zone, which should push your progression to the flat or corner immediately. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 2 match zones where the corner has flat responsibility and safety help rotates over the top of the corner route, this shell takes away the primary corner throw and forces you into the checkdown hook route.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high safeties since Z Spot thrives against single high Cover 3 shells with a curl to flat defender who has to defend two levels. If you see man coverage indicators like tight press corners and a robber safety, hot route the hook route into a shallow drag or speed out to give yourself a quicker man beater option. Attack this concept on early downs like first and second and ten to set up run action later, since the flat to corner combo forces linebackers to widen and opens up the backside crossers on subsequent plays. Pair Z Spot with HB Draw or Read Option out of the same Shotgun Tight look to keep linebackers honest on run fits before coming back to the spot concept. Against zone blitz teams that bring five and drop a linebacker into the hook, key the hook defender post snap and hit the corner route immediately before the underneath zone can widen and take away the sideline throw.
