Z Spot is a classic Spot concept run from Shotgun Tight with 11 personnel, and it is a well known Cover 3 beater. The diagram shows the outside receiver to the boundary running a deep corner route on the red line, the inside slot man running a quick hitch/spot route settling underneath, and the two receivers to the field side running a deep dig and a shallow drag underneath it, while the running back releases into the flat opposite the corner route. The primary read progression is the flat to hitch to corner high low on the boundary side: the QB reads the flat defender, and if he sinks with the corner route the hitch sits open underneath, but if he jumps the hitch the corner route is thrown behind him.
Defensive Reads
This concept is built to beat Cover 3 and other single high zone shells where the flat defender has to choose between the hitch and the corner route. Pre-snap, check safety alignment: a single high safety confirms Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which struggle to cover the high low stretch on the boundary. Post-snap, watch the flat defender's first two steps, if he widens to the flat the hitch is open immediately, if he sinks under the corner route the throw window to the flat/hitch closes. Man coverage with underneath help can bracket the corner route, so if you see press corners with a robber safety, prioritize the shallow drag or hitch instead of forcing the deep shot. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the passing lane between the hash marks, since that lurk can jump both the drag and the dig if the quarterback stares down the middle of the field too long.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the corner over the boundary receiver is playing off or press, since the corner route needs a cushion to work vertically.
Use the flat defender as your key: if a linebacker or corner sinks into the throwing lane of the hitch, immediately go over the top to the corner route for an explosive gain.
This play shines on third and short to medium yardage because the underlying hitch and drag give you easy sticks-to-move-the-chains options if the deep shot is not there.
Pair Z Spot with Tight Crosses or WR Hooks in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot sit on the same flat-to-hook read every snap.
Against zone heavy opponents, hot route the drag into a deeper crosser occasionally to keep linebackers honest and open up the spot route window underneath.
