Breakdown

All Cross out of Shotgun Tight is a classic crossing concept built to attack man coverage with natural rub picks across the middle of the field. The diagram shows the two outside receivers running deep crossing routes that convert into a dig and a corner breaking to the boundary, the inline TE releasing on a deep vertical seam from the backside, and the RB checking release out of the backfield before working an out route to the flat as a checkdown and safety valve. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working opposite the TE seam, then works down to the underneath dig, and finishes with the RB flat route if the middle of the field is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness this play exploits, since the crossers naturally rub off defenders and create separation. Watch for a single high safety rotating to the deep corner route side presnap, that tips zone coverage or a robber concept designed to jump the crosser. Post snap, identify if a linebacker or slot defender sits in a lurk technique in the shallow middle, that defender can undercut the underneath dig route and bait a turnover. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties tend to shut down the deep corner and seam routes, so be ready to check down to the RB flat route quickly. Blitz packages that send extra rushers up the middle can disrupt the timing of the crossers, so identify pressure presnap and be ready to get the ball out on the flat route as a hot read.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need a full field crossing concept that stresses man coverage from sideline to sideline.

Presnap, check for man coverage indicators like press corners or a single high safety rotating late, since the crossers create natural picks that beat man to man defenders trailing across the field.

Hot route the RB flat route into a shallow drag if you see zone coverage sitting underneath, this gives you an extra layer against Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sink drops.

Pair All Cross with Y Cross and Mesh Spot in the same set to keep defenders guessing between different crossing depths and timing, this disguises which route is the true first read.

If the user drops a linebacker into a lurk spot in the middle, work the deep corner route on the backside instead of forcing the crosser into traffic.
