Breakdown
Deep Read is a four verticals concept run out of Shotgun Tight with 11 personnel. Both outside receivers push straight go routes up the sideline, the tight end runs a vertical seam that can bend inside based on safety leverage, and the backside receiver runs a deep out from the boundary while an out route breaks off underneath on the strong side. The offensive line pass protects in a standard drop back scheme, and the primary read progression starts with the seam or inside vertical to see how the safeties rotate, then works to the outside go routes if the deep middle is vacated, with the boundary out as the answer against a hard two deep shell.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment since that dictates which vertical route will be open If the corners are playing off with soft technique, expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 and look for the deep out to be the counter against the flat defender Watch the middle linebacker or the seam defender depth at the snap, a shallow drop signals zone coverage that opens the seam throw behind him User controlled safeties who bail late or jump the underneath out route can bait the quarterback into a turnover, so patience on the initial read matters A tight nano blitz or six man pressure package can beat this play before the verticals develop, so audible protection or check down to the tight end quickly if pressure shows immediately
Usage Tips
Check pre snap for two high safeties versus a single high shell to decide whether you are throwing the seam or the outside verticals first
Against Cover 2, target the seam route in the honey hole between the corner and safety before the safety can get over the top
Against Cover 3, work the deep out route on the backside since the flat defender cannot cover both the sideline and the seam
Use hot routes to slide the underneath out into a quick option if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top
