Breakdown

Deep Read is a four vertical concept run out of Shotgun Tight with 11 personnel. Both outside receivers push straight up the field on go routes to stress the deep safeties, the slot receiver runs a vertical seam that breaks into a short out if the defense sits deep, and the running back stays in to check release before working underneath. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built on stretching the field vertically, with the primary read starting on the four verts stacking the safeties before working down to the seam-to-out breaking route as the underneath outlet.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap: two-high shells are vulnerable to the seam route settling behind the linebackers, one-high shells are vulnerable if the deep safety bites on either go route. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled safety sitting on the seam-to-out break, that is the lurk threat that can jump the throw if you stare it down. Identify if the cornerbacks are playing off or press, off coverage gives the go routes more separation early while press coverage means the receiver needs to win at the top of the route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play hits hardest since both outside verticals can win straight down the field. Zone blitzes or Cover 3 buzz looks with the flat defender sinking late can bait a throw to the out route, so confirm the flat defender's leverage before releasing the ball.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, count the safeties: if you see two deep safeties it is likely Cover 2 or Cover 4, if you see one deep safety expect Cover 3 or Cover 1, either way this play is designed to attack those shells vertically. Against Cover 3, hot route the far outside go into a comeback or work the seam-out combo since the flat defender cannot cover both the out and the deep third. Against Cover 2, the two outside go routes occupy the corners while the seam route settles into the throwing lane between the safeties for a big chunk play. Use this on early downs or obvious pass downs where the defense is likely sitting in a soft shell, and pair it in your play-calling sequence with Curl Flat or Stick from the same set so the defense has to respect both the vertical shots and the quick underneath game. If the user drops a linebacker into a deep hole or shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, check down quickly to the seam-out breaking route rather than forcing the deep ball into a shrinking window.
