Defensive Reads

Post snap, key any user controlled defender sitting in the deep middle or lurking in the throwing lane of the post, since a rangy free safety in a two high shell can undercut this route. Check linebacker drops in the intermediate zone, since a spy or zone defender sitting at the sticks can jump the corner route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. This play struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safety help over the top of the post, so be ready to check down to the flat route quickly in those situations.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or second and medium when you want to attack single high safety looks with the post route. Check the middle of the field pre-snap: if you see one deep safety, the post has a strong chance to split the defense for an explosive gain. Hot route the flat running back into a check down or drag if you diagnose a blitz, since the backfield route gives you a built in answer against pressure. Pair this play with Bench or Bench Spray from the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick out breaking concepts and this deeper post shot. Against teams that jump underneath routes with aggressive linebackers, lean on the corner route as your first read instead of forcing the post into a lurking defender.
