Breakdown

Stick out of Shotgun Tight 11 personnel shows both outside receivers running deep out-breaking routes toward the sideline off the snap, stretching the corners and safeties horizontally to open the middle of the field. The TE (or slot piece) runs a quick hitch/stick route to the flat while the opposite inside receiver climbs a corner route from the boundary, giving the quarterback a fast underneath option paired with vertical stress on the outside. This is a classic man and zone beater built for a quick, high-percentage progression: read the flat/stick route first, then work to the corner breaking route if the underneath defender sits.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check corner depth and alignment: soft corners playing off or bailing into zone tip that the outside breaking routes will have room to work. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers will jump the stick route to the flat and open up the corner route behind them. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flowing toward the flat route early since that usually signals man coverage or a underneath robber technique. This concept struggles against tight press man with safety help over the top since the flat route gets no room to work and the corner route runs into deep coverage. Cover 2 with hard-corner press and two deep safeties can shut this down by squeezing both the stick and corner routes, so look for a two-high shell before calling this play.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify if the corners are playing off man or bailing into zone since the outside breaking routes are designed to eat up soft coverage and off man technique.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the stick route to the flat since the corner route behind it will occupy the deep defenders and clear the underneath zone.

Against man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route the stick route runner to a quick out or speed out to create instant separation against slower linebackers.

Use this play on 3rd and short to medium since the stick route provides a safe, high-percentage completion, then pair it with Slot Stick or WR Hooks later in a series to keep the defense guessing on similar route concepts.

Mix in HB Draw or Read Option from this same formation to hold linebackers and keep the defense honest before coming back to Stick for an easy conversion.
