Zona Corners out of Shotgun Tight 11 personnel sends both outside receivers on corner routes breaking to the sideline, with the boundary corner route (red) climbing deep and the field corner route (yellow) working at a shorter depth. The two inside receivers run short outs at the sticks to hold underneath defenders and clear space for the corners behind them, while the backfield stays in to protect. This is a zone beater built to attack the deep outside quarters and hook zones, with the primary read starting on the deep corner route and working down to the underneath out if the corner is capped.
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since quarters and Cover 2 shells put extra strain on the corner routes and force a quicker decision from the quarterback. Watch the flat and hook zone defenders at the snap, if they sink too deep into the underneath outs they will vacate the corner window and give up the explosive play. User the deep half or deep third defender to squat on the corner route stem, this is the single biggest way to shut this concept down since it takes away the primary vertical read. Key linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers signal man or blitz looks that can be countered by converting the inside out routes into quick option breaks against man coverage. Against Cover 4 or Cover 6, watch for the outside cornerback jumping the corner route route stem early, which forces the quarterback to reset to the shorter out routes underneath as the checkdown progression.
Look for two high safeties or quarters shells pre-snap since the stacked corner and out combo on each side is designed to stretch zone defenders vertically and horizontally at the same time.
Use motion or a hot route on one of the inside outs to convert it into a quick option route if you see man coverage showing late, since the natural spacing still creates a rub against man defenders.
This play hits best on second and long or third and medium when the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure.
Pair this call with WR Hooks or Mesh Spot earlier in a series so the defense starts jumping the short underneath routes, then come back to Zona Corners to hit the deep corner window once safeties bite on shorter combos.
If you see a Cover 3 shell, key the flat defender first since a hard flat drop opens the corner route immediately behind him for an easy explosive gain.
