Breakdown

Bench Swirl-Return is a Shotgun Tight 11 personnel pass play built off a two-receiver bunch look to the right and a single receiver to the left running a corner route. The right side stacks a flat route underneath a deep outside vertical, creating a high-low stretch on the sideline defender, while the backside receiver runs a quick out and up into the corner to attack over the top. Blocking is standard pass protection with no play-action or screen elements, and the primary read progression starts with the flat-to-corner stretch on the right before working back to the backside corner route if the initial reads are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender on the right, if he widens with the flat route it opens a throwing lane underneath the deep vertical route for a big gain. Check safety depth before the snap, a single-high safety struggles to help over the top on both the right side vertical and the backside corner route simultaneously. Look for user-controlled defenders sinking into the flat to jump the underneath route, since that leaves the deep sideline route wide open against most zone shells. Cover 3 with a hard flat drop can take away the quick flat throw, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer and climb the progression to the corner route. Man coverage with an aggressive corner jumping the backside corner route breaks},this play down quickly, so recognize press coverage pre-snap and be ready to check into a different concept.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and medium when you need a quick answer against zone coverage but still want a shot play built in.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender on the right, if he sits at depth expecting the flat route, hot route him into a shallow drag to bait a jump.

Against man coverage, key on the backside corner route since it is your best man beater if the cornerback presses at the line.

Pair this play with Bench and Bench Spray in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between flat, spray, and vertical stretch concepts out of the same personnel and formation look.

If the defense shows two-high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the flat-to-corner combo on the right since the deep half should be occupied longer, opening the underneath window.
