PA WR In from I Form Pro shows a play-action fake to the HB before the QB works a three level route concept. The backside X runs a deep corner route up the sideline while the flanker to that side clears out underneath on a drag to the opposite side of the field. The Y (TE) runs a dig style in route across the middle from the strong side, crossing over the ball to the void vacated by run fits, and the FB or extra blocker stays in to protect after selling run action. This is a play-action shot play designed to attack zone drops and man leverage simultaneously, with the primary read progression starting on the deep corner route for an explosive shot, then coming down to the in cutting route working across the middle as the second read, and finally checking down to the drag if the defense drops deep.
Defensive Reads
Read the free safety pre-snap, if he is aligned deep middle in a single high shell the corner route has a favorable one on one matchup for a big play. Post-snap, watch the flow of the linebackers, if they bite hard on the play-action fake the in route will have a wide open throwing lane across the middle. Beware Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, these shells take away the corner route and force the quarterback to check down to the in or drag routes. Identify user controlled defenders sitting in the deep third or playing lurk in the middle of the field, since a smart human defender can jump the in route if the quarterback stares it down. Watch for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the FB or extra protector needs to pick up any free rusher to give the quarterback time for the deep shot to develop.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more likely to respect the run fake from I Form personnel.
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the corner route is designed to win over the top on Cover 3 or Cover 1 rotations.
If you see two deep safeties, hot route the corner to a deep out or peek the in route immediately since the corner will be squeezed into double coverage.
Pair this call with HB Blast Alert Z Lookie or FB Dive Fake HB earlier in a drive to sell the run fake harder and make linebackers bite on the play fake.
Use max protect adjustments or keep the FB in to block against aggressive four man rushes and exotic pressure looks before dropping back.
