Breakdown

PA WR In is a play-action pass out of I Form Pro 21 personnel that sells the run fake to the HB before working a three level stretch to the play side. The outside WR runs a deep in that cuts across the field at roughly 15 yards, the inline TE releases into a corner route that clears space vertically, and the backside WR runs a shallow drag underneath to hold linebackers. The HB stays in to block off the fake, giving the QB a clean pocket to read the corner route first, then work down to the deep in as the primary route against zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he crashes hard on the run fake he opens a throwing lane for the deep in route. Key the corner over the outside WR, if he sinks into a deep zone drop instead of biting on the play fake this route concept gets tougher to complete. Identify two high shells pre-snap since the deep in sits comfortably in the void between the flat defender and the deep half safety. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow drag lane, a lurking backer can jump the underneath route and bait a bad throw. Man coverage with press corners on the outside WR is the biggest threat to this play since the deep in has no natural leverage against tight man technique.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to sell the run action off your I Form ground game and freeze the linebackers. Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties expect the deep in to sit down in the soft spot between zone landmarks for an easy completion. If the defense shows single high or bites hard on run fakes, hot route the TE corner route into a seam or flag to attack the vacated deep middle. Pair this with HB Blast or HB Lead Dive earlier in a drive so the play fake actually holds the second and third level defenders. Against man coverage, look to the drag route underneath since the deep in can get picked off by trailing corners with tight technique.
