HB Middle out of I Form Pro (21 personnel) is a downhill power run designed to hit between the tackles with an iso blocking scheme. The fullback leads through the hole to isolate and take on the first linebacker to show, while the offensive line blocks power at the point of attack to seal the interior gap. Backside receivers run clearout routes to the boundary to pull defenders out of the box, so this is a run play, not a man or zone beater through the air, and the primary read progression for the HB is to press the mesh point, key the fullback's block, and pick the correct crease off his lead before bursting through the line of scrimmage.
Pre-snap, identify the number of defenders in the box and the depth of the linebackers since a light box or linebackers playing off the line signals a clean crease for the fullback's iso block. Watch for a Mike linebacker sitting square in the A or B gap, as that is the primary defender the fullback is designed to engage and move. If the defense shows a run blitz with a linebacker crashing downhill before the snap, expect the hole to close quickly and be ready to bounce the run outside. Zone coverages with safeties rotating late tend to leave the box vulnerable since extra defenders are tasked with deep responsibilities rather than stacking the line. Man coverage with linebackers in press run fits or a defense that sends extra help into the box on early downs will shut this play down, so avoid calling HB Middle into heavy stacked fronts or short yardage run blitzes.
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when you need to establish tempo and keep the defense honest against your dropback game. Check the defensive front pre-snap for a light box (six defenders or fewer) since HB Middle thrives when the offense has a numbers advantage at the point of attack. If you see a stacked box or an extra linebacker creeping down, consider audibling to HB Toss or Power O to bounce outside instead of forcing it up the middle. Use the fullback's iso block as your primary read and stay patient, letting the crease develop rather than committing to a gap too early. Pair this play with PA Power O or FB Dive Fake HB later in a series so the defense has to respect both the interior run and the play action off the same look, keeping linebackers frozen and opening up explosive plays downfield.
