Breakdown

Mid Attack is a play action pass out of the I Form Pro set with 21 personnel that dresses up like a run to hold the linebackers before flooding the field with routes. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep post while the inside receiver breaks toward the middle on a corner style route crossing underneath, the fullback or slot releases on a curl into the vacated middle, and the backside X runs a flat clearing route to the far boundary. The play is built as a zone beater that attacks the seam and middle hole vacated by linebackers biting on the run fake, with the primary read starting on the post and working down to the curl and flat as the concept flows away from the action.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth at the snap. If they step up hard on the play fake, the post and corner routes will have wide open throwing lanes behind them. Identify Cover 3 versus Cover 4 pre-snap. Cover 3 leaves the deep middle exposed to the post, while Cover 4 forces you to check down to the curl or flat quicker. Key the nearest safety to the play side post route. If he stays deep and centered, look immediately to the corner route breaking underneath him. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the middle hole (lurk), since he can jump the curl or corner route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Man coverage with blitz packages is where this play struggles most, so if you see aggressive pre-snap blitz indicators, get the ball out fast to the flat route as a checkdown.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs when defenses are keyed to stop the run out of I Form personnel, since the play action freezes linebackers and opens the middle of the field.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties with soft linebackers is your green light to hit the deep post over the top.

If you see man coverage with a single high safety, work the corner route breaking inside since it creates natural separation against trailing defenders.

Hot route the flat route into a deeper out or drag if you are facing a Cover 2 shell that will not respect the flat, giving you a better zone beater underneath.

Pair this play with HB Blast Alert Z Lookie or 26 Duo earlier in a series to sell the run threat, then call Mid Attack once the defense starts crashing the box.
