Breakdown

Mid Attack out of the I Form Pro (21 personnel) is a play action flood concept that attacks the intermediate and shallow zones on both sides of the field. The X receiver runs a deep post that occupies the safety, the TE releases into a corner route toward the boundary while the FB checks down into a curl underneath it, and the Y receiver on the backside runs a shallow flat/out route breaking all the way across the field. Play side blocking holds up long enough for the fake handoff to sell the run action before the QB works his flood side. The primary read progression starts with the post to freeze the safety, then works to the corner route, down to the FB curl, with the backside flat as the outlet valve against a hard blitz.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety shell pre-snap, this tells you Cover 3 or Cover 1 is likely, which opens the corner route behind underneath defenders. Two high safeties pre-snap suggest Cover 2 or Cover 4, meaning the post from the X receiver has a tougher window and the flood side becomes the primary target. Key the flow of the linebackers after the play action fake, if they bite hard on the run, the FB curl and TE corner will have soft coverage underneath. User controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump the post route, so be ready to move to your second read quickly if you see a defender sinking into that lane. Man coverage on the backside flat receiver can be beaten easily since the shallow crossing route creates natural separation against trailing defenders.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium to keep defenses honest against the run action from I Form Pro. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheat toward the post, the corner route to the TE should come open in the void behind the corner. Hot route the backside flat receiver into a deeper drag if you are facing zone heavy defenses that sink linebackers under the corner route. Pair this call with HB Blast Alert Z Lookie or 26 Duo out of the same formation so defenses respect the run fake and bite on the play action. If you get pressure reads pre-snap, get the ball out quickly to the FB curl since he is the shortest, most available throw in the progression.
