PA Comeback Slide is a play-action pass out of I Form Pro 21 personnel that sells the run fake to the HB before the QB pulls and works to a slide route concept. The X receiver runs a deep comeback route back toward the sideline off a vertical stem, the TE slides across the middle of the field working from the strong side to a shallow crossing route, and the Z receiver on the far side runs a deep comeback of his own while the FB stays in to chip protect. This is a zone beater built off play-action, with the primary read progression starting on the X comeback against the flat defender or corner sitting on top, then working to the crossing TE underneath if the comeback window closes, with the backside Z comeback as a late window shot against soft zone shells.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap identify if the defense is showing a two high safety shell or single high look, since comeback routes are most effective against zone coverage where corners are backpedaling and creating separation for the sit-and-turn throw. Key the flat defenders and outside linebackers immediately after the snap: aggressive run fits toward the play-action fake open up the comeback windows on both sides of the field. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the flat or lurking underneath, since a smart user can jump the TE slide route or bait the QB into throwing to the comeback with a late close. This play struggles against man coverage with press corners who can mirror the comeback break, and it is vulnerable to disguised blitzes where the FB chip cannot account for extra rushers coming off the edge. Against zone blitz packages, the underneath defenders dropping into the crossing route lane can sit on the TE read and force the QB to hold the ball too long against the play-action fake.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and medium when the defense expects run based on your prior play calling out of I Form to maximize the play-action freeze on linebackers. Read the flat and corner defenders on the X side pre-snap: if the corner is playing off or the flat defender bites hard on the run fake, the comeback route will have a big throwing window. Hot route the FB out of protection into a checkdown flat route if you are facing a heavy blitz look, since the base protection only has the FB chipping before releasing. Pair this play with HB Blast Alert Z Lookie or HB Stretch Alert X Lookie earlier in a series so the defense keys run action off similar backfield sets, then hit them with this comeback slide concept once linebackers start creeping up. Against zone coverage look to the crossing TE route as the safety valve since it settles in the soft spot vacated by underneath defenders sliding to cover the comebacks.
