PA Misdirection Shot

Breakdown

PA Misdirection Shot is a deep shot play out of the I Form Pro 21 personnel that sells a misdirection run fake before releasing two vertical stems into a shot concept. The play diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep out breaking route that angles upfield and flattens toward the sideline near the top of the route, while the opposite receiver runs a corner route straight up the numbers before breaking outside toward the boundary. There is no shown crosser or underneath check down, so this is a true two man shot concept built to attack single high and split safety shells deep, with the primary read progression starting on the corner route as the number one target and working back to the deep out breaking route if the corner is not open.

Defensive Reads

Read the free safety depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow near the box expecting run action the corner route should be your first look off the play fake. Watch for cover 2 shells with corners playing outside contain, this alignment can jump the deep out breaking route since it works toward the sideline late in the route. Identify single high safety looks like cover 1 or cover 3, these shells leave the deepest defender vulnerable to being outleveraged by the corner route working vertically up the numbers. Key the linebackers at the snap, if they step up hard to play the run fake there will be a natural window forming behind them for either vertical route. Beware of user controlled safeties sitting in a deep lurk position, a smart user defender can rob the corner route if he reads the play fake quickly and stays home instead of biting.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs like first or second and long when defenses are not expecting a shot play and are still respecting the run fake from I Form personnel.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties bail into deep halves at the snap the corner route has a better chance to split the coverage in the seam.

Use hot routes to convert the deep out breaking route into a comeback if you are facing a cover 3 shell with a deep third defender sitting outside.

Pair this play with HB Misdirection or HB Counter Str earlier in a series so the defense keys run action from I Form Pro and bites on the play fake, setting up the shot later in the same drive.

Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages since the play action fake and deep routes take time to develop, if you see run blitz keys pre snap consider audibling into HB Slip Screen instead.
