Breakdown

HB Toss out of I Form Pro (21 personnel) is a pure outside run play with no pass or play-action component. The diagram shows the offensive line and TE reaching to the play side to seal the edge while the FB pulls in front of the HB, leading the way as the HB takes the toss and attacks the flat behind him. This is a perimeter run designed to get the ball outside quickly, beating overly aggressive interior run fits and gap-heavy fronts by bouncing outside before the defense can flow. The primary read is the FB lead blocker: follow his path to identify which gap or edge has opened, then decide whether to bounce outside or cut upfield off his block.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth and edge defender alignment since HB Toss struggles against defenses with fast flow to the edge like 46 or 4-3 under fronts with contain-conscious ends. Watch for a strong safety or slot corner cheating into the box pre-snap, which signals run support that can blow up the toss before the FB gets a clean angle. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and OLB: if they stay disciplined and squeeze the edge instead of crashing inside, the toss has nowhere to bounce. User-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill on jet or toss action can beat this play if they read it fast enough. This concept is most vulnerable to teams that play assignment-sound outside contain and use a spy or flow linebacker to mirror the FB's pull path.

Usage Tips

Call HB Toss on early downs when you have identified light box counts or defenses that are stacking the interior gaps. Use your FB as the primary blocking read and stay patient behind him rather than trying to outrun the play to the sideline immediately. If the defense shows an overload blitz or crashes hard inside pre-snap, this play can hit big because the toss action gets outside the leverage of those defenders. Pair HB Toss with HB Counter Str, HB Misdirection, and Off Tackle in the same set so linebackers cannot key toss action and overplay the edge. Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill from linebacker depth, use this early in a series to set up PA Boot or PA Sprint HB Flat later since defenders will start cheating outside.
