Seam 678 out of the I Form Pro 21 personnel set is a vertical stretch concept designed to attack the middle and outside thirds of the field with three seam and vertical route combos, hence the numbered naming. The blocking scheme keeps the fullback and offensive line in max protect to give the quarterback time to work through his route progression against man or zone coverage. This play functions primarily as a zone beater against split safety looks, with the primary read being the inside seam route working the void between the hash marks before working outside to the deep outs or corner routes if the middle is capped.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow or bites on run action from the play fake look, the inside seam will be wide open behind him and in front of the safety. Identify whether the defense is running a two high shell or single high safety look before the snap, this play thrives against Cover 2 and Cover 4 because it splits the seams, but struggles against Cover 3 with a rangy deep middle defender. Watch for user controlled safeties sitting in the deep middle zone (the lurk), if the user safety bails hard to the seam route, look to the opposite side vertical route or the corner route breaking away from help. Key the outside cornerback's press or off alignment, soft coverage invites an immediate seam throw while press man coverage means you need to protect the quarterback long enough for the receiver to separate vertically. Recognize inside blitz packages such as a Mike and Will double blitz, since the fullback stays in to block, a well timed edge blitz off the tight end side can beat the protection before your seam routes develop.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. If you see two high safeties, expect the seam routes to sit down in the honey hole between the flat defender and deep half safety, so hot route your outside receiver into a dig or hitch to give yourself a quicker checkdown. Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need a chunk play but still want protection against the blitz thanks to the extra fullback blocker. Motion the fullback into a wing set pre-snap to check for man coverage, if the defense follows the motion, throw the seam with anticipation before the linebacker can undercut it. Pair this play with HB Lead Draw or FB Dive Strong earlier in a series to get linebackers to sit on the run fake, then come back to Seam 678 to hit the seam route wide open behind a crashing box. Against aggressive user blitzers, use your hot route to convert the fullback into a quick flare route as a checkdown valve since the deep routes take time to develop.
