Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, since this determines which seam window will open first and how fast you need to progress through your reads. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if the Mike and Will linebackers drop deep into hook or seam zones immediately, that signals zone coverage and you should target the seam route in the widest natural throwing lane away from the zone drop. Key any user-controlled defender spying the deep middle of the field, since a lurking safety or linebacker sitting in the intermediate seam can jump the throw and create a pick six opportunity if you force it into a crowded window. Look for corner blitzes or overload pressure off the edge, since this play has extra protection with the FB and HB but a well-timed nano blitz through the A or B gap can collapse the pocket before the seams develop. Cover 3 defenses with a deep third safety patrolling the middle will bracket the inner seam, so if you see that shell post-snap, work your eyes to the outside seam or checkdown instead of forcing the ball into the middle third.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or in second and medium situations when the defense expects run out of the I Form personnel, since the play action tendencies of this formation set up defenders to bite on run fakes.
Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, target the seam route that splits the numbers between the corner and safety, since that window opens fastest against Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells.
If the defense shows single high safety (Cover 1 or Cover 3), hot route the outside receiver into a quick out or slant to beat aggressive corner press coverage while the seams occupy the linebackers and safety over the top.
Pair this play with HB Stretch Alert X Lookie or 26 Duo Alert X Lookie earlier in a drive to sell run action out of the same I Form look, then dial up Seam 678 once the defense starts crashing linebackers downhill.
Avoid calling this against heavy Cover 2 Man since the flat defenders and deep half safeties can squeeze the seam windows, instead lean on PA Double Post or Post from this set to attack over the top.
