Cross In out of Pro I Form (21 personnel) shows a two receiver route combo to the closed side. The outside receiver runs a deep in that breaks flat across the field after a vertical stem, while the backside X runs a corner style route up the seam toward the sideline, and the inline TE releases underneath on a shallow drag crossing under the deep in. This is a man beater built around the crosser creating natural rub traffic and separation against man coverage, with the deep in as the primary read and the underneath drag as the checkdown against tight man leverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the cornerback aligned over the outside receiver, if he presses at the line and turns his hips to run vertically before the break, that is a strong indicator of man coverage and the crosser should win. Key the middle linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers who sit at five yards or less will jump the TE drag route and take away the underneath outlet. Identify single high versus two high safety shells, a single high look invites the corner route on the backside to attack the void outside the deep safety's leverage. Track any user controlled defender flowing toward the crosser immediately after the snap, that lurk threat signals a zone drop designed to sit on in cutting routes and forces the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Look for slot or nickel blitzers timed to the snap count, quick pressure off the edge cuts into the time needed for the deep in to fully develop and forces a rushed throw to the shallow drag.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at safety depth, if you see two high safeties rotate your first read to the deep in since the middle of the field is more open for that breaking route.
Motion or shift the FB and HB to check if linebackers or a slot defender follow across the formation, that confirms man coverage and tells you the crosser will have room to work.
Hot route the TE drag into a quicker option against blitz heavy fronts since the crosser sits low enough to give the quarterback a fast outlet when pressure arrives.
Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or HB Draw earlier in a series so linebackers start cheating on run action, then come back to Cross In to let the deep in route sit down in the vacated void.
On third and medium, lean on the deep in as a sideline to sideline chain mover since the route naturally settles past the sticks against most man and zone drops.
