The diagram shows the HB taking a direct handoff and hitting the A gap behind the FB's lead block, with the offensive line executing a base blocking scheme to move the front four off the ball. This is a pure run play with no play-action or pass options attached, designed to attack a light box between the guards and win with physicality up front. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to key the FB's block, follow him through the A gap first, and bounce to the backside A gap if the playside gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the MIKE linebacker's alignment before the snap: if he is stacked directly behind the center at four yards or less, he is reading run fits fast and will meet the FB block quickly. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 4-4 look with extra bodies in the box, since heavy fronts with nine plus defenders shut this play down by outnumbering the blockers. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles' gap discipline: if they are shooting gaps aggressively (nano blitz style) instead of reading blocks, the lead dive can get blown up before the FB even reaches the second level. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing downhill too fast from depth, since a disciplined LB who sits and reads will fill the lead dive lane and limit this to a short gain. This play struggles against run blitzes and stacked fronts but wins against passive zone read defenses that are playing off the ball waiting to diagnose, especially cover 2 or cover 3 shells that keep only six in the box.

Usage Tips

Call HB Lead Dive on early downs against defenses showing base fronts with only six or fewer defenders in the box, since the FB lead block loses value against stacked eight man fronts.

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth: if the MIKE is sitting shallow at five yards or closer, this play will struggle to create a crease and you should audible to something else in the set.

Use this play to set up HB Lead Draw and Inside Zone WK later in the same drive, since all three hit downhill but attack slightly different gaps, keeping defenders honest on their fits.

Against defenses that key the fullback with their MIKE linebacker, pair this call with FB Dive Fake HB to freeze that same linebacker and open up cutback lanes.

In short yardage or goal line situations this is one of your best power calls, but avoid it on third and long since there is no pass option to bail you out if the box is loaded.
