Identify Cover 3 or Cover 1 pre-snap since both leave single deep defenders vulnerable to the vertical shot, while two-deep shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 clog the top and force you to check down. Watch linebacker blitz packages and nano blitz stunts up front, since the draw action can hold blockers just long enough for a delayed blitzer to time up a hit on the QB before the shot route develops.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs, ideally first or second and short to medium, when the defense has shown run support or has linebackers creeping up expecting HB Lead Draw or Inside Zone WK from this same personnel group. Pre-snap, look for a single high safety or a defense that has been biting on your run action from I Form Pro, since two deep shells with disciplined safeties will sit on the shot routes and take away the big play. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or hitch as a checkdown if the safety stays home, since the deep shot needs a full beat to develop and you do not want to force it into double coverage. Sequence this play after you have run HB Lead Draw, HB Blast, or FB Dive Fake HB a few times to condition the linebackers and safety to key run, then hit them with the shot on the same personnel and similar pre-snap look. Avoid calling this against known blitz-heavy defenses on third and long since the draw fake eats up protection time you need against extra rushers, and a free run at the QB kills the shot before it develops.
