Power O Alert X Smoke is a base gap scheme run out of I Form 21 personnel, with the play design showing the offensive line pulling to create a power lane for the HB to attack downhill behind the FB lead blocker. The Alert tag gives the X receiver a smoke screen as a pre-snap conversion option, shown by the red arrow route out wide, allowing the QB to throw a quick hitch to the flat if the defense shows a blitz or aggressive alignment that removes the corner from the smoke area. This is fundamentally a run play with an RPO-style bailout, and the primary read progression starts with the pre-snap alert to the X smoke before the QB commits to handing off on the power concept if the numbers favor the run.
Key the corner over the X receiver pre-snap. If he is playing off with a soft cushion, the smoke alert is live and the offense will likely take it against blitz looks. Watch the box count before the snap. Stacked fronts with an extra defender in the box are designed to stop the power run, which pushes the QB toward the smoke throw as the built-in answer. On the snap, linebackers who fill downhill too fast on run action can be hit by a well timed smoke throw if the corner has cleared out or bit on run fake. To shut this down, keep a corner with tight outside leverage on the X to erase the smoke option, and use a defender who can both hold the edge against power and stay alert to the flat. Man coverage with press alignment on X combined with a gap-sound front takes away both options this play offers.
Use the Alert X Smoke conversion when you see a corner playing outside leverage or a safety rotating down into the box, since that removes support from the flat and gives you an automatic completion. Check the defensive front pre-snap. If the defense stacks the box with six or more defenders, throw the smoke instead of forcing the power run into a numbers disadvantage. Pair this play with Power O and PA Power O in the same set to keep the defense guessing between the standard power run, the alert smoke conversion, and the play-action shot off the same look. Use this on early downs in normal I Form sets to stay balanced, and mix in HB Blast Alert Z Lookie or HB Stretch Alert X Lookie from this set to give the defense multiple alert reads they have to respect. Against man coverage with the corner playing tight to the X, stick with the power run since the smoke window shrinks when there is no cushion.
