Breakdown

HB Counter Wk is a weakside counter run out of I Form 21 personnel that pulls linemen from the strongside to lead the HB through the weakside gap. The diagram shows the HB taking a counter step before following his pulling blockers, with the FB and offensive line executing down blocks and kick out blocks to seal the edge. This is a pure run play designed to attack aggressive downhill linebackers and gap-shooting defensive tackles by using misdirection to slow their initial read, with the primary read progression starting at the play side alley (bounce outside if the edge is sealed) before working back inside off the pulling guard's block.

Defensive Reads

Check linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are crashing downhill on flow this play is designed to gash that aggression. Watch the strongside defensive end and outside linebacker, if they squeeze hard on the initial counter step the play can bounce outside. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange technique, a disciplined backside linebacker replacing the pulling guard will kill this run before it develops. Man coverage on the backend with a stacked box shell tends to leave fewer defenders to fill the counter alley, giving this play room to break. Heavy interior blitzes up the middle can beat this if the nano blitz timing disrupts the pulling guard before he reaches his block, so respect A gap pressure pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a strong pre-snap set to sell power the other direction before the ball is snapped.

Watch for defenders crashing hard to the strongside, since that overpursuit is exactly what the counter action punishes.

Use this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to keep defenses honest and set up play-action counters later in the drive.

Pair this with PA Power O and HB Counter Str in the same personnel and formation so linebackers cannot key run direction based on backfield action alone.

If the defense stacks the box with extra linebackers, hold off on this call since counter needs numbers advantage to hit the alley cleanly.

Break the tackle stick or spin move only after the pulling blocker engages, do not rush the cutback lane.
