Power O out of the I Form Pro set with 21 personnel is a gap scheme power run designed to hit off the guard with a lead blocker clearing the hole. The diagram shows the HB taking a slight angle step before hitting downhill through the play side guard gap, with the FB leading through as the kickout or lead blocker to seal the edge defender. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater, and the primary read is the play side guard and FB block: if the FB seals the edge, the HB presses the hole and reads the puller for the cutback lane, otherwise the back should bounce outside off the FB's block.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for run blitz tells like linebackers creeping up to the line of scrimmage or a safety rotating down into the box. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage; if they are crashing hard inside they can blow up the kickout block from the FB. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's first step: if he flows fast to the play side gap, user him to string out the play before the puller gets there. This run struggles against odd fronts with a true nose tackle and a fast flowing Will linebacker, since they can beat the double team and fill the gap quickly. It hits well against base 4-3 or 4-4 looks where the defense is playing gap sound but slow to trigger, especially if the safety stays high in a two deep shell.
Usage Tips
Run Power O early in drives to establish tendencies before mixing in PA Power O off the same look to punish aggressive linebacker flow.
Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has 6 or fewer in the box with base personnel, this is a green light run.
User the FB immediately after the snap to manually adjust the kickout block if the defense shows an outside blitz or extra edge defender.
Pair this with HB Counter Str and HB Misdirection in the same set to keep second and third level defenders honest against gap schemes.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) since it is a committed downhill run that struggles in obvious passing situations.
Avoid calling this against stacked fronts with a Mike linebacker sitting tight over the play side guard, since the puller has no room to work.
