Power O out of the I Form Pro set is a gap scheme run play built around a lead blocker isolating the play side. The diagram shows the HB taking a downhill path behind the FB, who leads through the hole to seal the edge, while the offensive line pulls a backside guard to kick out or wrap up on the point of attack. This is a run play designed to beat gap and one gap fronts by outnumbering the defense at the point of attack, with the primary read being the FB's lead block and the play side double team before the HB decides to bend the run inside the kick out block or bounce it outside off the puller's track.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with the linebackers stacked tight, since heavier fronts with extra bodies in the box can outnumber the double team and kill this run before the pull develops. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker. If they are crashing hard down the line at the snap, the puller needs a clean angle to kick them out or this run gets blown up in the backfield. Key the strong side safety's depth pre-snap. If he is sitting at 8 yards or closer and shows run support, he becomes the primary tackler and the HB should be ready to cut back away from pursuit. Man coverage on the perimeter usually means fewer defenders rotating into the box, which is the ideal shell for this play to hit for positive yardage. Watch for user linebackers spying the pulling guard or shooting the play side gap early. That is the biggest defensive read that shuts this run down, since a well timed user blitz can beat the puller to the hole before the double team forms.

Usage Tips

Run this early in drives on first and second down to keep defenses honest against your play action shots in this same Pro I Form package.

Pre-snap, check the box count. If the defense has six or more in the box with no extra run support rotating down, consider audibling to a pass concept instead.

Use motion sparingly since this is a heavier gap scheme run, but if you do motion the FB or a TE, confirm the defense does not shift into an overload front that clogs the pulling lane.
