Breakdown

Outs from the I Form Pro 21 personnel sends both outside receivers on quick out breaks while the TE and backfield stay in to protect, giving the QB a fast, high percentage throw against man and zone alike. The primary read progression starts with the boundary out to the shorter side of the field, then works to the field side out, and finally checks down to the HB or FB if both outs are covered. This is a man beater at its core because the hard out break creates natural separation against trailing corners, but it also holds up against zone since the out sits down in the void between the corner and flat defender in most Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells.

Defensive Reads

Watch cornerback depth at the snap, since corners playing off with outside shade are baiting the out route into an interception window. Key the flat defender in Cover 3 or Cover 4, because if he widens too fast to the flat he opens the out route throwing lane, but if he sits and squats the QB has to hold the ball and check down. Identify Cover 2 shells with the safeties splitting the field, since hard corner drops directly into the out route lane will shut this play down and force a check to a vertical route elsewhere in the playbook. Look for blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge, since with only the TE and backfield blocking this protection can break down quickly against a nano blitz or overload pressure. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk position underneath, since a smart user will jump the out route timing and undercut the throw if the QB telegraphs the read.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion with the FB or HB to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and tells you the out route will win on the break.

Hot route the backside out into a quick hitch or slant if you see Cover 2 with corners sitting deep, since the out route loses to hard corner drops in that shell.

This play excels on second and medium to third and short because the out route timing lets you throw before the sticks with room for the receiver to turn upfield after the catch.

Pair Outs with HB Stretch Alert X Smoke or HB Toss out of the same I Form Pro look to keep defenses honest on run fits, then come back to Outs once linebackers start creeping into the box.

Combine this play with Curls or Comebacks later in a series so defenders who jump the out route on film get burned by a comeback or curl sitting behind them.
