Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard toward the line or drop into deep zone drops without reading the backfield, the screen lane opens up quickly. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender staying home in the middle of the field or spying the HB, as that lurk threat can jump the screen and turn it into a big loss. Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells with disciplined linebackers who read run-pass keys are the best counters to this play, since they can sit on the screen and close the passing lane. If the defense shows a nano blitz or edge pressure with numbers, expect the screen to hit big, since blockers will have a numbers advantage once the rush overcommits upfield.
Usage Tips
Call this play on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage or a blitz look based on pre-snap defender depth at the line.
Watch for defensive linemen and edge rushers crashing hard upfield, since that rush momentum is exactly what makes this screen effective.
Use the vertical routes as window dressing only, do not force throws downfield unless you see a clear coverage bust, since the HB screen is the whole point of the play call.
Pair this play with HB Toss, HB Iso, or Power O in your play-calling sequence to sell inside and outside run action first, making the defense over-pursue and setting up the screen as a change-up.
Avoid calling this against zone coverage shells with disciplined linebackers who sit and read, since they can sniff out the screen and blow it up for a loss.
If the user controls a linebacker and spies the backfield, hold the ball an extra beat and let your blockers set the wall before releasing to the HB.
