HB Blast is a downhill power run out of I Form 21 personnel that sends the HB straight through the A-gap behind the FB lead blocker, as shown by the direct vertical path in the diagram. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with double team potential at the point of attack while the FB isos through to seal the first inside linebacker who threatens the gap. This is a pure run play with no route concept or play-action element, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to key the FB's block, press the A-gap hard, then bounce off the FB's hip to the open crease if the gap is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch the fullback pre-snap. If the offense lines up in this I Form 21 personnel, the FB almost always leads through the A-gap on this concept, so crash your Mike linebacker downhill immediately at the snap. A run blitz or A-gap nano blitz shuts this play down hard since it beats the FB to the point of attack before the double team can form. Stacked fronts with the nose tackle two-gapping and both A-gaps filled kill this run, so if you see a 4-3 under front or heavy box count of seven or more, sit tight and read run first. User the Mike linebacker and key the FB's block angle instead of the HB. Shed the FB block by mirroring his hips and you blow the play up in the backfield. Cover 0 or Cover 1 with an extra run defender is the best shell to call against this, since it adds a hat to every gap and removes the natural crease the FB tries to create.
Usage Tips
Call HB Blast when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders since the FB lead block can handle a single second-level defender cleanly.
Check the Mike linebacker depth pre-snap. If he is stacked tight behind the nose you risk a stuffed run, so consider audibling to HB Stretch or Off Tackle instead.
Use HB Blast early in a drive to establish tempo, then set up HB Lead Draw or FB Dive Fake HB later since both share the same I Form action and freeze linebackers who key on the fullback.
This play hits hardest on short yardage and goal line situations, third and one or fourth and one, where a stacked box actually helps since the FB seals a predictable gap.
