Breakdown

HB Blast is a downhill power run out of the I Form Pro 21 personnel package, designed to hit the A gap in a hurry. The fullback leads through the hole first, sealing off the first threat inside while the HB follows directly behind him on a north south track with no lateral hesitation. This is a straight power run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is the FB block first, reading whether to stick behind him through the A gap or bounce off his hip if the gap gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Look for the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow expecting run he will fill the A gap fast and you should be ready to bounce. Watch for a nano blitz from the interior defensive line, this play can get blown up quickly if a user times the snap and shoots the same gap the FB is trying to seal. Identify whether the defense is in a run stopping front with both safeties crashing down, since that alignment clogs the A gap and kills this play. Check if the defense is in a light box with a single high safety, since that usually means the second level is thinner and the FB lead block has a clean angle. Against zone blitz calls where linebackers show blitz then bail, the FB may whiff his block, so be ready to cut the run wide if you see late second level movement.

Usage Tips

Use this play in short yardage and goal line situations where you need a tough, physical gain between the tackles.

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has stacked eight or more in the box you may want to check out of this look into a play-action shot instead.

Take control of the fullback at the snap to manually adjust his block onto the correct linebacker fill, especially against odd front nano blitz looks.

Pair this play with PA Power O or PA Lead Draw Shot in the same set to keep linebackers honest after you have shown HB Blast a few times.

Run this on early downs to set up longer developing shots like PA Draw Shot once the defense starts sending extra run blitzers.
