Breakdown

PA Boot is a play-action bootleg concept out of I Form Pro 21 personnel that pulls the QB off the fake and rolls him toward the boot side, buying time outside the pocket. Off the play fake, the TE runs a deep corner route out of the backfield area, releasing vertically before breaking hard to the sideline, while the FB or second back releases into the flat underneath as the checkdown. On the backside, an outlet route runs a deep in/comeback cut across the middle as a window against zone. This is primarily a play-action zone beater designed to hold linebackers and safeties with the run fake and hit the corner route as the primary read, with the flat route as the secondary and the backside crosser as the third progression if the pocket collapses.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety pre-snap, if he is shaded toward the boot side he can jump the corner route and force you to the flat instead. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they stay home and do not bite on the fake, the underneath flat route to the FB will be crowded and you should look to the corner route immediately. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a deep half or deep third defender staying square, since that defender can sit on the corner route and undercut it. Man coverage with a linebacker spying the QB shuts this down fast, since the boot lane collapses and the QB has no easy escape lane to buy time. Look for blitz packages sending edge pressure from the backside, since the bootleg action moves the QB away from backside rushers, but if the defense stunts to the play side, the QB has to get the ball out on rhythm to the flat or corner route.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense is stacking the box expecting I Form run action, since the play fake sells harder against aggressive run fits.

Pre-snap, look for linebackers creeping up or safeties sitting shallow, that tells you they respect the run and the boot corner route will have a bigger window.

If you see man coverage across the board, prioritize the flat route release from the FB since the TE corner takes longer to develop and man defenders can trail it.

Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper dig or drag if you are facing zone heavy shells like Cover 3, giving you a true zone beater window over the middle.

Sequence this with HB Stretch Alert X Lookie or Inside Zone earlier in the drive so the defense keys run fits, then hit PA Boot to burn linebackers who bite on the fake.
