PA FL Hitch is a play-action shot play out of I Form 21 personnel designed to sell inside run action before hitting a big shot down the field. The play fakes the handoff to the HB then sends both the outside WR and the TE/Y up the seam and sideline on vertical routes, with the flanker running a hitch that sits down at intermediate depth as a checkdown against soft coverage. The Z receiver runs a corner route on the right to occupy the deep third defender, making the primary read progression the vertical seam or streak route first, then the flanker hitch underneath if the deep shot is not there.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and box count since a stacked box with safeties creeping down signals man coverage or run blitz vulnerability to the vertical routes. Watch for Cover 3 or single high safety looks, as the corner route on the right and vertical seam on the left can stress the deep third defenders if the safety bites on the play fake. Post-snap, key the flanker hitch defender since a hard closing corner or nickel indicates man coverage while a defender sitting in a zone drop signals Cover 2 or Cover 4. User the deep safety immediately after the fake to shut down the vertical shot plays and force the quarterback to check down to the hitch route. Against Cover 2, the corner route and hitch combo isolates the underneath zone defender, so spy or lurk with a linebacker to take away the shorter throw and bait a deep incompletion.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the play-action button through the animation so linebackers bite on the fake and open passing lanes underneath.

Use this against teams that stack the box or show run blitz looks pre-snap since the vertical routes will punish aggressive safeties and linebackers crashing downhill.

Check the flanker hitch as a quick outlet if the corner routes are covered, especially against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where the underneath zone opens up after the play fake.
