Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a one-high or two-high shell since single-high safeties are far more vulnerable to the double go routes on the outside. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they crash hard on the play-action fake it confirms man or zone coverage is thinned out over the middle for the delayed vertical route. Key the flat and hook zone defenders against zone coverage, since a sagging linebacker can undercut the hitch route if the quarterback holds it too long. Against man coverage, look for a cornerback playing outside leverage on the flanker, which opens the comeback window on the hitch before the safety can rotate over. This play struggles against aggressive zone blitzes that get quick pressure before the play-action fake fully develops, so respect delayed pressure off the edge and account for a spy or blitzer crashing the mesh point.
Usage Tips
Run this out of a run-heavy personnel look after establishing HB Blast or 26 Duo so linebackers respect the play-action fake and step up. Check the strong safety pre-snap: if he is sitting at depth in a two-high shell he can bracket the go routes, so hot route the flanker hitch into a deeper comeback or hold it as your primary against that look. Use this play on second and medium or third and short when defenses expect run and are more likely to load the box against your I Form personnel. Pair it in a sequence with HB Lead Draw or FB Dive Fake HB earlier in the drive so the defense keys run fits before you dial this shot play off the same formation. If the corner over the flanker is playing off man, take the hitch immediately for a quick chain mover instead of pushing it downfield into a waiting safety.
