Breakdown

This Pro I Form Post play sends the outside receiver on a deep post from the boundary side while the inline slot runs an out and up that breaks outside then vertical up the sideline. The backside receiver runs a quick out to the flat, and the fullback releases into the backfield on a shallow crossing route underneath. This is a man beater built to attack single high coverage, with the primary read being the post working against the middle of the field, followed by the out and up if the safety cheats over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is aligned deep middle or has rotated toward one side, since a true single high shell is where this post route wins most consistently. Post snap, watch for a user controlled safety flying over the top to jump the post route, which means you need to hit the out and up or the flat route on the backside instead. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender sitting in the post window is the toughest shell to beat here since it takes away the primary read and forces you to check down to the flat or the shallow crosser. Man coverage with no safety help is where this play shines, so if you see man match principles or a single high look with man corners, trust the post route on time. Watch linebacker depth against the shallow crossing route from the fullback, since a linebacker sitting at five yards or shorter will jump that route and bait a turnover.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety alignment before the snap since the post route is designed to split the difference between the corner and safety in man coverage.

If the corner is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, hot route the out and up receiver to push vertical immediately since he will win against most one on one matchups.

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when the defense is more likely to bring pressure or sit in man coverage looking to jump underneath routes.

Pair this with HB Stretch Alert X Lookie or PA Power O earlier in a series to get the safety to bite on run action, then come back with this Post to hit the post route against a cheating safety.

Motion or check the fullback release if you see a linebacker sitting in the shallow zone underneath since the crossing route can get clogged against zone drops.
