Defensive Reads
Check the cornerback depth on the Z receiver pre-snap, if he is playing tight man coverage with no safety help over the top the comeback route can be jumped for a pick or incompletion. Identify the safety shell before the snap, a two-high shell often signals softer coverage on the outside which favors the run since underneath defenders may sit deeper in zone drops. Watch for a stacked box with linebackers crashing downhill immediately after the snap, this is a strong indicator the defense is selling out on run and the Z alert should be triggered instead. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking near the flat or shallow zone, since that defender can undercut the Z comeback route if the quarterback telegraphs the throw. Diagnose blitz packages pre-snap by counting defenders on the line, a heavy edge blitz can blow up the iso run quickly so be ready to check to the Z alert as a pressure release.
Usage Tips
Use the alert check when you see the defense stacking the box with 7 or more defenders, since that signals man coverage on the outside and opens up the Z comeback for an easy explosive gain.
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep the defense honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.
