Breakdown

PA Weak Flood is a play-action flood concept out of the I Form Pro 21 personnel set that floods the weak side of the field with three levels of routes while faking the weak side run. Off the fake, the fullback and offensive line sell run action to the weakside, while the flood side stacks a deep out breaking route, an intermediate out from the slot area, and a shallow drag underneath, with the backside receiver running a deep comeback for a one on one shot away from the flood. The primary read progression starts with the deepest outside comeback route on the backside (the red route), then works to the deep out on the flood side, then down to the intermediate out, and finally checks down to the shallow drag if the flood is capped, making this an effective Cover 3 beater against rotated zone shells.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake and vacate their zone drops, the intermediate out and drag will be wide open in the void they leave behind. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high with a rotating corner signals Cover 3 which this flood concept is designed to exploit. Track the flat defender or curl to flat zone player, if he sinks with the intermediate out route, the shallow drag underneath becomes the easy check down against Cover 3 sink and squat coverage. Beware Cover 4 quarters shells where the cornerback stays deep on the flood, this can take away the deep out and force you into the lower percentage drag route. Look for a user controlled linebacker spying or lurking in the shallow drag lane, since that player can jump the underneath route and bait a bad read if the quarterback locks onto the check down too quickly.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses expect run action out of the I Form to sell the play fake harder.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety rotating toward the flood side, expect Cover 3 and attack the deep out with your first read.

If the cornerback on the backside comeback is playing off coverage, take the shot on that route immediately since it is a built in man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 3 cornerbacks squatting on the flood.

Hot route the shallow drag into a deeper crosser if you see zone defenders sitting underneath, this gives you a fourth option against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells that roll two safeties over the flood.

Pair this with HB Stretch Alert X Lookie or HB Blast Alert Z Lookie earlier in a drive so the defense respects the weakside run fake, then hit this play action shot when linebackers start crashing downhill on run reads.
