Inside Zone from Pro I Form 21 personnel is a straight downhill zone run play with the FB leading through the hole and the HB reading his blocks off the FB's path. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison to seal gaps and create movement based on defensive alignment. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is the FB and HB reading the frontside double teams before the HB picks his gap based on how the defensive line flows.
Defensive Reads
Stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box are the biggest threat to this play, since it relies on numbers advantage created by the FB lead blocker. Watch for linebackers reading run keys quickly and shooting gaps, which can blow up the zone blocking scheme before the HB can find his cut. Man coverage on the backside is largely irrelevant here since there are no route options shown, so defenses should focus entirely on gap integrity rather than coverage shell. A Mike linebacker who stays square and does not bite on the FB's initial path can string this play out and force a cutback into pursuit. Blitzes off the edge from the defensive front are less effective than interior blitzes, since interior penetration disrupts the double team blocks this scheme depends on.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when you want to establish tempo and set up later play-action shots. Watch for defenders stacked in the box pre-snap since heavy fronts with 8 in the box can clog the interior gaps this play is designed to attack. Motion is not shown in this look, so key on linebacker depth: if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow, cut back opportunities open up behind the FB's block. Pair this play with PA Power O or PA Draw Shot in the same set to keep defenses honest against the run look before hitting them with a shot play off similar action. Against aggressive user-controlled defenders who crash downhill, bounce the run wider by manually steering the HB away from the initial flow.
