Defensive Reads
Man coverage is the biggest vulnerability here, so as the defense identify if the offense is running mesh action and get ready to fight through traffic at the crossing point rather than blindly trailing your assigned receiver. Bail into a zone shell like Cover 3 or Cover 4 to force the quarterback into the tighter window on the deep dig, and make sure your underneath zone defenders sink to take away the shallow crossers instead of chasing them man to man. Key the tight end and slot receiver at the snap: if they immediately break inside on shallow angles, this is mesh, and you should call for a linebacker spy or use a user defender to jump the rub route. Watch for the checkdown to the second back in the flat on obvious passing downs, since offenses will dump it off there if the mesh and dig are covered. A well timed inside blitz or nano blitz can disrupt the quarterback's timing before the mesh routes fully develop, since this concept relies on rhythm and quick reads.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the strong safety to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since this play's value is almost entirely tied to beating man coverage at the mesh point. If you see two high safeties with corners in press, trust the mesh crossers to win separation off the natural pick. If the defense shows single high or Cover 3, hot route the crossers to sit down as zone beaters and lean on the deep dig as your first read. Pair this call with Curls or Cross In earlier in a series so linebackers start cheating underneath, then hit the deep dig for an explosive gain once they bite. Save this play for third and medium to third and long situations where the dig route has enough field to develop, and use HB Pass or PA Boot as compliments to keep the defense honest against overplaying the crossers.
