Off Tackle out of the I Form Pro set is a straightforward gap run play designed to hit off the tackle to the strong side, as shown by the red arrow angling from the backfield through the tackle box. The FB leads through the hole while the offensive line executes down blocks and kicks out the edge defender to seal the alley for the HB. This is a pure run play with no route combos or play-action window dressing, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the hole off tackle first, then bounce outside if the edge is sealed or cut back inside if the linebackers flow too hard to the play side.
Defensive Reads
Check the box count before the snap; if there are 7 or more defenders in the box, this play is vulnerable to gap penetration and you should consider an audible. Identify whether the strong side outside linebacker or edge defender is crashing hard down the line, since that dictates whether the ball carrier should bounce outside or stick to the called gap. Watch the Mike linebacker's initial step after the snap; if he flows fast to the play side gap, the cutback lane behind him opens up for a bigger gain. This run is naturally susceptible to a nano blitz off the edge, so be ready to adjust protection or hot route the FB into the lead block earlier if the defense shows an aggressive edge rush pre-snap. Off Tackle beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with normal box counts but struggles against heavy run blitzes or defensive line shifts that stack extra bodies directly in the play side gap.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a formation check to identify if the defense is stacking the box, since Off Tackle needs at least one extra gap blocker to work versus 8 man fronts.
Watch for the Mike linebacker's alignment before the snap; if he is shaded to the play side, consider audibling to HB Counter Wk or HB Counter Str to attack the opposite gap.
This play excels on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when defenses are more likely to be in base personnel and not stacked for the run.
Pair Off Tackle with PA Power O or FB Dive Fake HB in the same set to keep linebackers honest, since both plays sell similar backfield action before diverging.
Take the user controlled defender's leverage into account: if you are controlling the FB as the lead blocker, aim your block based on whether the edge defender is being kicked out or the play side linebacker is filling downhill.
