Lead Draw out of I Form Pro (21 personnel) is a delayed handoff run designed to look like a dropback pass before the HB gets the ball behind lead blocking from the FB. The diagram shows two receivers releasing vertically off the line (the gold route breaking outside to the flat area before cutting upfield, and the blue route working a deep in-cut before turning back up the seam) to sell pass and hold linebackers and safeties in their drops. Since this is a pure run play, there is no receiver progression to read, the primary "read" is the frontside crease created by the FB lead blocker as the HB presses the line and picks his gap based on linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with linebackers biting hard on the QB dropback creates the ideal crease for this play since defenders are out of position when the delayed handoff hits. Watch for defensive lines using stunts or twists since the delay in Lead Draw can actually play into the hands of a well timed interior stunt that beats the FB's lead block. If the defense shows a spy or a linebacker sitting in the middle of the field reading the QB's eyes, that defender is your key, he will trigger the run fastest and should be accounted for with the FB or lead blocker. Blitz heavy fronts with extra rushers crashing downhill can blow up this play before the draw develops, so avoid calling it into known all out pressure packages. Zone coverages with linebackers dropping into passing lanes tend to overreact to the vertical route action, opening cutback lanes for the HB if he presses the mesh point patiently.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when the defense shows a pass-heavy alignment such as nickel or dime personnel to exploit lighter boxes.

Watch pre-snap for linebackers creeping up expecting run, since this play depends on the draw delay to freeze them, a stacked box negates the deception.

Pair this with Slant And Go's or PA X Curl earlier in a series so the defense respects the pass action and bites on the initial drop, setting up the delayed handoff for a bigger gain later.

If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing the FB to check block or audible into HB Iso instead since blitzing linebackers can beat the draw's timing before the crease forms.

Run this on second and medium or third and short to catch aggressive pass rushers overcommitting to the quarterback drop.
