Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth and alignment since fast-flowing linebackers with aggressive run keys are the primary target for this misdirection. Watch for a stacked box or extra run support defenders shading toward the strong side, which signals a defense susceptible to the counterflow cutback. Post-snap, key on whether linebackers immediately flow with the HB flip action or hold their gaps, since disciplined gap-and-a-half defenders will erase the cutback lane. User the play-side linebacker or a lurking safety to sit on the cutback rather than biting on the flip motion, taking away the entire concept. Beware of scrape exchange or contain defenders who stay patient at the line of scrimmage, since they can string the run out and force a negative play.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs when you have already established HB Toss or HB Counter tendencies so linebackers are primed to flow hard toward flip action.
Watch pre-snap for stacked box looks or linebackers cheating toward the strong side, since that overcommitment is exactly what this misdirection exploits.
