PA Double Post is a play-action shot play out of the I Form Pro 21 personnel that sells the run fake to the HB before both outside receivers break vertically into post routes at different depths. The staggered post concept forces safeties to choose which route to take away, making this a strong Cover 2 beater since it stresses the deep middle void between the corners and the two deep safeties, and a Cover 4 beater because it puts vertical conflict on both safeties at once. The primary read progression starts with the deep post that clears the safety cheating over the top, then works down to the underneath post if the defense rotates coverage away from the fake and squeezes the throwing window.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify whether the safeties are aligned deep and split (Cover 2 or Cover 4 look) since that alignment is exactly what this play is designed to punish. Watch the middle linebacker depth, if he sits shallow to respect the run fake he cannot get enough depth to help defend the deep post, giving you a bigger throwing window. Post snap, key the safety over the receiver running the deeper post, if he bails hard and takes away that route, throw the underneam post to the other side before the second level defenders can react. Beware Cover 3 or a single high safety shell with man coverage underneath, a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in the middle of the field can jump both posts and turn this into a turnover. If you see a user controlled safety creeping toward the line pre snap, expect a disguised blitz or run blitz look, get the ball out on time to the first post read since the protection may not hold up against extra pass rushers.

Run this on early downs like first or second and medium so the defense is still respecting inside zone and off tackle tendencies from this personnel grouping.

Check safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are sitting deep and outside the numbers you have a clean Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell to attack with the double post.

Sell the play action fully by holding the ball on the fake and letting the pocket set before looking to your first post read, rushing the throw kills the deep shot.
