Breakdown

Goal Line Fade lines up out of I Form 21 personnel with both outside receivers releasing vertically toward the sideline on fade routes, the near receiver breaking off the line into a corner style fade while the far X runs a straight vertical fade to the opposite boundary. The slot TE/FB releases into the flat as a checkdown option underneath while the offensive line holds a standard pass protection set. This is a man beater designed to isolate your outside receivers on smaller cornerbacks in one on one jump ball situations near the goal line, and the primary read progression starts with the back side fade to the X receiver before working to the near side fade and finally down to the flat route if both verticals are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check cornerback alignment on both outside receivers since press man technique with no safety help over the top is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which usually signals man coverage underneath and confirms the fade route will have a one on one matchup. Post-snap, user your best cornerback or safety onto the primary fade receiver and play through the receiver's hands to contest the catch point rather than the ball. This play struggles against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where a deep defender can sit in the corner of the end zone and undercut or box out the fade route. Look out for aggressive man press corners jamming at the line, since a well timed jam can disrupt the timing of the fade route and force a late or inaccurate throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play almost exclusively inside the five yard line where the end zone limits the defense's ability to play deep coverage over the top.

Before the snap identify if the defense is showing man coverage with cornerbacks pressed at the line, since this play is far less effective against zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3 that get extra bodies in the throwing lane.

Hot route your best contested catch receiver to run the fade if the defense shows a mismatch, and consider motioning a receiver to check if the defense reveals man coverage with a defender following across the formation.

Throw the fade with anticipation and lead your receiver toward the back corner of the end zone, using the jump ball mechanic to give your bigger receiver a chance at the ball over a smaller cornerback.

Pair this play with HB Blast Alert Z Lookie or HB Slam Fk End Arnd earlier in the sequence to sell the run threat near the goal line and get defenders to bite on run fits before coming back to this fade shot.
