Defensive Reads

Watch the weak side linebacker depth. If he is sitting tight to the line at snap, he is likely reading run fast and will fill the cutback lane quickly, so plan to press the gap and cut immediately rather than dancing behind the line. Post-snap, key the defensive tackle alignment on the play side. A shaded nose tackle or three technique that gets moved off the ball by the zone combo block tells you the crease is opening on schedule. This play struggles against gap exchange run blitzes and stacked fronts where the defense sends extra bodies into the box pre-snap, since the zone blocking scheme loses its numbers advantage. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker flowing hard to the play side.
