Breakdown

PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint out pass from the I Form Pro set that puts the QB on the move to the right off a fake HB run. The diagram shows the X receiver running a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline, the TE releasing vertically before working an out toward the boundary, and the HB sliding to the flat as the checkdown after selling the run fake. The blocking picks up as a sprint out protection sliding with the QB, and the primary read progression starts with the TE breaking route at the intermediate level, moves to the X receiver comeback if the corner sits soft, and finishes with the HB flat route as the built in checkdown against blitz or fast flow to the sprint side.

Defensive Reads

Read the flow of the linebackers at the snap, since heavy downhill run fits confirm they bit on the fake and opened lanes for the TE breaking route. Watch the corner to the sprint out side pre-snap, if he is playing off man or soft zone the comeback route from the X receiver becomes the primary window. Key the flat defender or curl to flat player, this defender determines whether the HB checkdown or the TE out route is open since both attack the same landmark area. This play struggles against a hard edge contain from the defensive end or a spy that stays home on the run fake, since it collapses the sprint out pocket quickly. Zone defenses with a linebacker sinking into the flat and a safety rotating over the top can take away both shallow options and force a difficult throw into the comeback route.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs or second and medium when defenses expect run out of I Form personnel, since the play action fake plays off base run tendencies. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell, because the TE breaking route works best against zone drops where the flat defender bites on the run fake. If the corner to the sprint side is playing tight man coverage, hot route the X receiver comeback into a deeper corner route to stack on top of the leverage. Use the HB flat as your answer versus contain blitzes or edge pressure since the QB is already sprinting away from backside rushers. Pair this with HB Blast or FB Dive Fake HB earlier in a drive to sell the run action harder before dialing this up as the play action counter.
