HB Misdirection is a run play out of the I Form Pro 21 personnel that flashes the ball one direction before the HB cuts back against the grain. The diagram shows the FB and offensive line blocking down to sell flow to the play side while the HB takes a jab step then redirects on the diagonal path shown in red, attacking the opposite gap. This is not a pass concept or RPO, it is a pure misdirection run play designed to punish overly aggressive linebackers and defensive linemen who flow hard with the initial line movement. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the misdirection fake, read the backside cutback lane created by the linemen blocking down, and burst through the gap that opens once second level defenders bite on the flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and shoulder turn at the snap, if they flow hard toward the initial fake direction the cutback lane will be wide open. Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts without extra run support, these are the alignments most vulnerable to misdirection since linebackers are taught to fill gaps aggressively. Check for a spy or disciplined Mike linebacker who sits and reads backfield action instead of flowing, this defender can blow up the cutback before it develops. Look for defensive line slants toward the play side flow, heavy slant calls open the backside gap even further and make the misdirection more explosive. Beware defenses in dime or nickel packages with lighter boxes, faster defenders can close the cutback lane before the HB fully redirects, so avoid calling this against pass-heavy sub packages.
Usage Tips
Call this play against defenses that show aggressive linebacker flow or heavy run blitz tendencies since the cutback design is built to exploit overplayed gap fits.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at linebacker depth to confirm they are keying the backfield flow rather than staying disciplined in their gaps.
Sell the misdirection with your left stick timing, do not bail on the fake early or you lose the entire cutback lane the play is designed to create.
Pair this with HB Blast or HB Iso earlier in a drive so linebackers get conditioned to flow hard, then hit them with HB Misdirection to gash the cutback side.
Best used on early downs (first or second down) in normal or ace personnel matchups where defenses are not yet in dime or nickel run-support shells.
