Shotgun Spread is the 10 personnel workhorse set in Madden: four wide receivers and a single back aligned next to the quarterback, with two receivers to each side and no tight end on the field. That personnel grouping is what separates it from tighter Shotgun sets like Bunch, Tight, or any 11 and 12 personnel look. There is no in-line blocker to help the tackles, so protection is five man across the board, but in exchange you force the defense to either play light in the box or leave a linebacker covering a slot receiver. Pre-snap, the alignment is balanced enough that you can flip the play art and attack either hash without tipping strength.
The play list is unusually deep for a single set, and it splits into three clear buckets. First, the quick game and RPO package: RPO Peek Slant, RPO Zone Peek, RPO Alert Bubble, RPO Alert WR Screens, RPO Read Slot Slide, Mtn RPO Q Draw Base, Quick Slants, Bubble Slants, Slants Fix, and the full RNS family (RNS Hook, RNS Curl Flat, RNS Y Stick, RNS Hitches, RNS Streak, RNS Switch Smash, RNS Switch Streak). These let you throw off the read instead of holding the ball behind a five man protection. Second, the vertical and intermediate shot plays: Four Verticals, Deep Attack, Corner Strike, Smash Corners, Smash Y Post, Post Flags, Slot Fades, Hawks Post KO, and Flanker Dig. Third, the mesh and crosser package: Mesh, Mesh Post, Y Cross, X Shallow Cross, Z Shallow Cross, H Shallow Cross, Y Shallow Cross, Inside Cross, X Follow, and Post Trail.
Because you have two slot receivers on the field, the matchup math is the entire point. If the defense stays in base personnel, your third and fourth receivers are being tracked by linebackers or a slow strong safety, and every slot option, wheel, and seam route becomes a leverage win. If the defense counters with dime, you get the run game (Inside Zone, HB Draw, HB Counter, Read Option, GT Read Option) against a light box plus a screen package (HB Middle Screen, HB Slip Screen, HB Cross Screen, WR Screen, WR Mid Screen) that punishes soft edges. The 3DRB and SLWR tags mean your best receiving back and best slot threat are on the field on almost every snap, which is why this set carries so many competitive game plans by itself.
Read the box count pre-snap: six or fewer defenders in the box means Inside Zone, HB Draw, or GT Read Option is the free yardage play, while seven or more means go to the mesh and quick game concepts.
Against blitz heavy users, live in the RPO and RNS package plus the screen game (HB Slip Screen, WR Screen, WR Mid Screen) so the ball is out before the pressure arrives.
On third and medium, motion a slot across the formation to identify man or zone, then attack with Y Stick, Snag X Corner, or Mtn X Spot depending on what the rotation shows.
Hot route a slot receiver to a fade or corner any time you see a linebacker aligned over him, and use Slot Fades or Smash Corners when the defense plays single high with no slot help.
Pair Four Verticals and Deep Attack with your screen calls from the same set so identical pre-snap looks produce opposite results, and keep PA Comebacks or PA Slot Cross in the rotation to slow down aggressive edge rushers.
