Overview

Run And Shoot Offense is a 234 play generic scheme book built on spread passing volume, with 56% of its calls (132 plays) coming out of Shotgun across seven different sets. That is the widest Shotgun footprint in the book by a mile, and it means your audible package is essentially a Shotgun package with everything else acting as a change of pace. The concept list backs it up: Pass Play, Play Action, Flat, Spot, Cover 3 Beater and Motion all live here, so you are getting quick rhythm reads and built in zone beaters rather than a grinding downhill run game.

The second layer is Pistol at 54 plays (23%) across two sets. That is a real chunk of the playbook, not a token formation, and it gives you Power, Power Run, Counter, Toss and Dive gap runs from a look where the quarterback keeps depth and can still sell play action. Singleback adds 36 plays (15%) across two sets for base personnel work and Play Action off single high looks. Only five formations total, so there is very little bloat to scroll past once you learn the tree.

Where this book gets thin is the margins. Goal Line Offense is nine plays in a single set (4%), headlined by FB Dive out of 23 personnel, and Hail Mary is three plays across two sets (1%) with Goal Post as the deep shot. You are picking Run And Shoot Offense because you want to live in 11, 10 and 00 personnel spread sets, spam Shotgun formation variety to disguise identical route combos, and use Pistol as your only real gap scheme run answer. Players who want heavy formation menus and multiple tight end run packages should look elsewhere.

Scheme Fit

Run And Shoot Offense wants a quarterback with high throw power and short to intermediate accuracy who is comfortable reading Cover 3 Beater and Spot progressions from Shotgun on every snap, and mobility helps a lot on the Pistol play action rollouts and RPO looks. You need at least four receivers you trust, because 10 and 00 personnel are load bearing here, plus a receiving back with route running and catching to attack Flat concepts out of the backfield. This is a book for a spread passer who calls plays in tempo, uses motions and hot routes as his primary pre-snap tool, and does not need a fullback led downhill run game outside of the nine play Goal Line Offense package.

Strengths

  • Seven Shotgun sets across 132 plays lets you run the same Spot, Flat and Cover 3 Beater concepts from wildly different alignments, so an opponent reading formation cannot pre-diagnose your route combo before the snap.
  • Access to 10 and 00 personnel means you can force nickel and dime on the field, then run your Pistol Power and Counter calls into a lightened box without ever subbing personnel.
  • The Motion concepts paired with 00 personnel give you cheap pre-snap leverage checks: motion a receiver, read man versus zone, and hot route into the vacated flat.
  • Pistol at 54 plays across two sets is enough volume to build a genuine gap scheme identity (Power Run, Counter, Toss, Dive) while keeping the quarterback in a shotgun style read depth for RPO looks and play action rollouts.
  • Only five formations keeps your audible package tight, so you can carry Shotgun and Pistol in the same audible slot family and flip between them without ever hunting through the play call menu.

Weaknesses

  • Just five formations and 14 sets means a user who has seen your book twice knows your entire tree, and 56% Shotgun makes your tendency obvious from the formation screen.
  • Goal Line Offense is nine plays in one set, so your entire short yardage and red zone punch package comes down to calls like FB Dive out of 23 personnel with no alternate heavy look to shift into.
  • Singleback is only 36 plays across two sets, which limits your ability to grind out a lead with base personnel runs or sell single high play action from a traditional under center look.
  • No dedicated I Form, Strong or Weak style two back formations, so you have no true lead blocking downhill run game and goal line stands become predictable.
  • Hail Mary is three plays across two sets, so end of half and end of game situations give you almost nothing beyond Goal Post as a designed deep shot.

Usage Tips

Build your primary audible package entirely out of Shotgun, choosing three of the seven sets so you can motion between them on the fly and keep your Spot and Flat combos identical regardless of alignment.

Reach for Pistol on second and medium and third and short: the Power, Counter, Toss and Dive concepts there hit before the defense can rotate out of the nickel your 10 and 00 personnel forced onto the field.

Save Singleback for early first downs and clock management drives where you want Play Action off a run look, not for obvious passing downs where the two sets give you too little variety.

Treat Goal Line Offense as a single package and script it in advance: with only nine plays and calls like FB Dive, you should already know which two you trust inside the two yard line.

Only call Hail Mary with zero timeouts and no other option, since three plays across two sets (Goal Post included) will not survive repeated use against a user in deep quarters.
